Space Rock Breaker
Splitting rocks on a wrapping screen, where the smallest fragments are worth the most
About Space Rock Breaker
Space Rock Breaker is the arcade original rebuilt as one HTML file: a ship with momentum, a screen that wraps on all four sides, and rocks that break into two smaller, faster rocks each time you hit them. You get three lives and no way to earn more, which sets the tone.
The scoring is the part most people misread. A large asteroid pays twenty points, a medium fifty and a small one hundred, so the money is entirely in the debris. Reducing one large rock all the way to dust is worth five hundred and twenty points and leaves seven objects to survive in the meantime. That single decision is the whole tension of the game.
Waves grow by one rock each time, and there is no shop, no upgrade and no weapon beyond the one you start with. What changes between wave one and wave eight is the density of the field, most of which you created yourself. Score, wave and ships remaining sit along the top, and the best run is kept on your device.
What is different about this version
There is no flying saucer, no hyperspace jump and no bonus life — the three things most remakes add back. What you get instead is a respawn that behaves: after you are destroyed the game waits up to two seconds for the middle of the screen to clear before returning you, rather than dropping you into a rock. The touch controls are not a virtual keyboard either. The stick is absolute — the ship turns towards wherever you push it, and thrust is scaled by how closely it is already facing that way, so it cannot fire its engine while pointing backwards. That makes the phone version easier to steer and useless for the classic retro-burn.
How to play Space Rock Breaker
- Rotate to aim and thrust to move; the ship keeps drifting when you stop.
- Fire at asteroids to break them. Each large rock becomes two mediums, each medium two smalls.
- Shots and rocks wrap around the screen edges as your ship does, so a bullet can come back around.
- Any contact with a rock costs a life, and three lost lives end the run.
- After a death you reappear in the centre once it is clear, with a few seconds of blinking invulnerability.
- Clear every rock to advance; each wave adds one more asteroid.
- Score is the running total, and the highest is kept on your device.

Strategy
Most runs end because of something the player did twenty seconds earlier, and it is almost always a turn or a burn. The ship rotates at a fixed rate that takes well over a second for a full circle, while your bullets cross a good part of the screen in that time, so line up the next target before you finish the current one and think of the ship as something you point rather than something you drive. Momentum makes the same argument. The thrust is small and the drag is almost nothing, so a couple of seconds of held thrust leaves you travelling at a speed you cannot cancel without an equally long burn facing the other way — short taps, one at a time, with the nose already aimed where you want to end up.
The scoring pushes against survival, and that is the real decision in each wave. Breaking a large rock into four smalls quadruples both your points and the number of things that can kill you, so the profitable sequence is to break one rock at a time and finish its fragments before touching the next. Do it near a screen edge when you can: the pieces inherit a spread that sends them apart, and the wrap gives you somewhere to be that is not between them. Late in a wave, when only smalls remain, they are quick but they are also all that is left, which is the moment to be greedy.
Mistakes that cost you the game
- Holding thrust. A long burn leaves you crossing the field at a speed that takes as long again to kill.
- Breaking several large rocks before cleaning up the fragments, which turns a field into a crowd in seconds.
- Shooting across the middle at long range — your own bullets wrap, and so do the pieces you just made.
- Sitting still to line up a shot, when the rocks are drifting towards you the whole time.
- Spending your invulnerability seconds getting oriented instead of clearing the space around the centre.
Tips
- Break rocks near an edge so the fragments scatter across the wrap rather than into your path.
- Fire in short bursts; the gun has a cooldown, so holding the button gains nothing.
- When the field crowds, thrust through a wrap deliberately — the far side is usually emptier.
- Small rocks are the hundred-pointers, so a methodical wave is worth far more than a rushed one.
Questions about Space Rock Breaker
How many lives do I get?
Three, with no extra lives to earn. A run ends when the last one is gone.
Do the asteroids get faster?
Smaller pieces travel faster than the rocks they came from, and each wave adds one more, so the pressure comes from numbers rather than a speed multiplier.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. A steering stick and a Fire button appear on touch devices, and the stick points the ship rather than nudging it.
Does it cost anything?
No. Space Rock Breaker is free to play, runs in your browser, and needs no download, install or account.
