About Ball Runner

A rolling ball, a square island crowded with crates, and somewhere among them a hole you cannot see until you are almost on top of it. That is the whole setup. Meteors mark the ground with a spreading circle a second or two before they land, so the island is constantly telling you where not to be while you search for the one tile that gets you off it.

The twist that makes it a game rather than a scavenger hunt is the timer. The hole relocates every fifteen seconds, and when it moves your search starts again somewhere else. Each level adds more crates and drops meteors more often, and staying put on a level makes both worse, so hesitation is punished from two directions at once. It is rendered in 3D and runs in the browser without anything to install. Three lives, one island at a time, and a score built from the coins you picked up and the seconds you had left when you dropped through the floor.

What is different about this version

Half the meteors are aimed at you. When a warning circle appears, there is an even chance it was placed within about ten units of wherever you happened to be standing at that moment, and the rest land anywhere on the island. That is why standing still while you look around is the worst thing you can do, and why moving as soon as a circle opens usually saves you. The hole is also protected on purpose: several crates are placed in a ring around it when the level is built, so it is almost never sitting in open floor. Falling off the edge is not a failure state at all, because the rim bounces you back. The only things that can hurt you are meteors.

How to play Ball Runner

  1. Roll the ball around the island and search for the hidden hole.
  2. An arrow fades in to point the way once you are close to it.
  3. Watch the growing circles on the ground and clear them before the meteor lands.
  4. Collect coins for ten points each; some sit on crates you have to jump onto.
  5. Roll into the hole to clear the level. Three hits and the run is over.

Strategy

The bonus for clearing a level is a hundred points plus twenty-five for each level you have already cleared, plus five for every second still left on the hole timer. Finding the hole with twelve seconds to spare is worth sixty points more than finding it with none, which is six coins. Coins are worth ten each, so a detour that eats four or five seconds of the timer to collect one is losing you points. Take the coins that lie on your search path and ignore the rest. Search where the clutter is. Because crates are deliberately arranged around the hole, the busiest corner of the island is more likely to be hiding it than the open middle, and the sweep that works is a lap around the crate clusters rather than a wander through the gaps. Keep to a pattern, because random wandering costs the same seconds whether it finds anything or not.

The ball is heavy and that is the thing people fight. Ground friction is strong but the top speed is high, and in the air you keep only about half your steering, so a jump taken to dodge a meteor commits you to the direction you were already travelling. Crates bounce you back harder than you hit them, which is the usual reason a ball ends up pinned under a falling rock. Steer early, take corners wide, and treat a full-speed approach to a crate wall as a mistake rather than a shortcut. When a meteor circle opens under you, roll out sideways rather than trying to reverse.

Tips

Questions about Ball Runner

Can I fall off the island?

No. The rim bounces you back, so the only way to lose a life is a meteor.

Why can I not see the hole?

It is hidden until you are near it, at which point an arrow fades in and points towards it. Distance, not luck.

Does it need a strong phone?

It draws in 3D, so a few-year-old Android handles it but a very old one may struggle. Nothing to install either way.

Does it cost anything?

No. Ball Runner is free to play, runs in your browser, and needs no download, install or account.
